Councillors changing tune out of time
The Auckland Ratepayers’ Alliance has released a list of 25 candidates who have pledged to hold annual rates increases below 2%.
“Pledging to keep rates inflation at 2% or under is not a left or right political decision,” says Auckland Council candidate Greg McKeown, “and simply makes sense given the huge rates increases ratepayers have had to endure over the last two terms of council.”
“It’s ironic but convenient that councillors who have previously voted for compounding 3.5% rates increases into the Long Term Plan are now, months before the election, signing up to 2%,” says McKeown.
“Most Aucklanders have seen rate increases spiral ahead of wage growth. Like most of us do making our own budgets work at home, it’s time for council to control its costs,” says McKeown.
