New CBD car parking building opens in central Christchurch
Parking in the Christchurch central city received a significant boost today (Wednesday, April 5) with the opening of the new Hereford Street car park in the block between Colombo and Manchester Streets.
The majority of the bays are allocated for casual parking. The building is being opened in two stages, with 360 parks opening today (Wednesday) and the remainder scheduled for mid-April.
The 580-bay building has pedestrian access through to High Street, opposite the ANZ Centre.
Electronic message boards on each floor show how many parks are available, with red and green lights over each parking bay indicate those that are available.
Building owner Tim Glasson says the car park aims to help make shopping in the central city easier.
“When we designed the car park, we wanted to make sure that people could walk through to the Retail Precinct in High and Cashel Streets. It’s really important to provide shoppers with easy access in a convenient location.”
