Release of Police Pike documents and call for Inquiry

Pike River Families are releasing police debriefing documents quoted from in media last night.

The documents include notes about failures to maintain chain of evidence. This is immensely concerning given the loss of potentially crucial evidence in the form of an electrical cabinet.

Sonya Rockhouse lost her son Ben in the mine, she says the documents show the need to reinvestigate what happened at pike. “We knew that the recovery of the drift would uncover evidence, but we didn’t expect it would lead to this. It shows just how much we need to get into the drive to get more evidence and put it in front of a proper inquiry.

Anna Osborne whose husband Milt lost his life at Pike agrees. “We have said right from the start that this project was about uncovering evidence as well as our boys remains. It’s clear that recovering the drift is the first step to recovering the truth.”
