Wainuiomata’s Hugh Sinclair Park Set For Transformation
Hutt City Council has unveiled a preliminary masterplan to improve Hugh Sinclair Park and wants to hear what the public has to say about it.
The masterplan was developed with input from key local stakeholders including the Wainuiomata marae, Love Wainuiomata community group and residents of the neighbouring Wainuiomata Masonic Village.
The wider community are now invited to contribute their views on the masterplan and what they’d like to see in the park at hutt.city/hughsinclair. Feedback is open until 5pm on 9 June.
Once feedback has been evaluated, detailed design will be undertaken. This will include a community day at the park to gather more local input.
The finalised design will cater to the area’s increasingly diverse population. It will focus on meeting the needs of a range of local users, improved infrastructure and drainage, and enhanced recreational facilities.
Hugh Sinclair Park is nestled in Wainuiomata’s main commercial area, a rapidly evolving part of the suburb surrounded by new housing, retirement facilities and local businesses.
Wainuiomata Councillor Keri Brown shared her enthusiasm for the project, highlighting Council’s ongoing commitment to enhancing local spaces and supporting communities.
"Hugh Sinclair Park is an integral part of our town centre. We want this to be a space that truly reflects who we are as a community - welcoming, diverse and growing.
"Wainuiomata is seeing significant growth, and we need to make sure we respond with good quality, flexible public spaces that support the wellbeing of today’s community. Council has already made a significant investment in the town centre, and the park redevelopment will complement that."
Work on Hugh Sinclair Park is scheduled to start later this year. It has a budget of $600,000 which is included in Council’s Long-Term Plan.
