Waimakariri Mayor Dan Gordon can’t wait for work to start on a high-profile Rangiora corner site.
Work is expected to get under way in the next six to eight weeks on a new 700 square metre, two-storey on the BNZ corner site, on the corner of High and Ashley streets.
Mr Gordon said the project is ‘‘a great outcome’’ for the Rangiora town centre.
‘‘We are thrilled to be working alongside developers on such an important site.
‘‘Residents often tell us one of the things they love most about Waimakariri is the unique character of our townships.
‘‘This project will strengthen Rangiora’s character, look and feel, and add a stunning entrance to the CBD (central business district).’’
The BNZ corner site on the corner of High and Ashley Streets was expanded 10 years ago, following the realignment of the intersection.
The Waimakariri District Council sold the site to Cornershop Investments Ltd in 2023.
Cornershop Investments Ltd is made up of local business people Eileen and Murray Irvine, Bridget Hope and Gabe Rijpma, and Andrea and Jake Gardner.
The Irvines played key role in the Good Street redevelopment and other projects in the Rangiora town centre.
Mr Irvine said the new building is expected to open by the end of next year.
‘‘It’s taken a bit longer than we had planned, but we are very excited.
‘‘It’s a substantial investment in that corner of town and it should liven it up a bit.’’
Mr Irvine said negotiations have begun with prospective tenants, with an accountancy firm lined up for the top floor and BNZ likely to move into part of the ground floor.
Once the tenants are settled into the new building, Mr Irvine said a refurbishment of the existing BNZ building is planned.
Waimakariri District Council property manager Rob Hawthorne said the development ticks all the boxes.
‘‘From the council’s perspective, this is going to bring exciting new retail and business opportunities right into the heart of Rangiora.’’
