Marlborough Mayor Congratulates Lucy Blakiston - Young New Zealander Of The Year
Mayor Nadine Taylor has congratulated Lucy Blakiston on being named Young New Zealander of the Year 2026, calling the achievement “a standout moment of pride for Marlborough and New Zealand.”
“Lucy Blakiston is an extraordinary Marlburian whose creativity, courage and commitment to informed, compassionate conversation have resonated with millions of young people around the world,” Mayor Taylor said.
“As the founder and CEO of Shit You Should Care About (SYSCA), Lucy has built one of the world’s most influential youth-led media platforms, starting from her bedroom in Blenheim and growing into a global movement. Her work empowers young people to engage on the issues that matter, in ways that are accessible, empathetic and genuinely worldchanging.”
Mayor Taylor said Lucy’s success across digital media, publishing and global storytelling reflects both her talent and a deep connection to her roots.
“Lucy embodies the values we are proud of in Marlborough - innovation, integrity and heart. She is inspiring a generation to care, think critically and to make a difference. We could not be prouder of her.”
“On behalf of the Marlborough community, I warmly congratulate Lucy on this outstanding national honour.”
“I’d also like to recognise Leon Bristow, another very talented Marlborough creative who grew up in Picton, who was also nominated as a finalist in the awards.”
“It’s an outstanding achievement for a young leader to be a nominated for these awards, and to have two of the three finalists and winner hail from Marlborough is fantastic.”
