Australasian Company Supports Earthquake Recovery
Australasian Company Supports Earthquake
Recovery
Transpacific Industries Group (NZ) Ltd
(TPI) has put together a significant assistance package to
help Cantabrians recover and rebuild following the 4
September earthquake.
As well as working around the clock to help clean up the region, the company has implemented a number of measures to support its own 300 Canterbury based staff and the wider community.
One of these gestures is
boosting the Mayoral Relief Fund with a $100,000 cheque,
which will be presented to Mayor Bob Parker at 2pm today
outside the Civic Building in Worcester
Boulevard.
TPI is a leading provider of
comprehensive waste and environmental services in
Australasia. Managing Director Tom Nickels says the
contribution to the Mayoral Fund is one of several ways the
company is helping the earthquake recovery effort.
“We want to help Canterbury get back on its feet after the devastating earthquake. We have already seen so much good work by the community to begin rebuilding the region and we hope our donation will help with the effort,” he says.
Tom Nickels says it has been an extremely busy and challenging time for TPI and its Canterbury-based employees.
“Many of our staff are dealing with their own personal losses, while at the same time working long shifts to keep essential services operating in Canterbury,” he says. “The earthquake has affected our staff in many different ways. I know of six who have probably lost their homes and at least 20 others with very serious damage to their property.
“To help lift the spirits of our Canterbury based team, each has been sent a card from our Australasian head office, with a supermarket voucher to help them.
“We have also set up a support fund within the company for staff members badly affected by the earthquake,” he says. “We’ve set the ball rolling with a $20,000 donation and are asking staff across New Zealand and Australia to add what they can. We’ll match each employee contribution dollar-for-dollar.”
Many of TPI’s subsidiary companies have been working around the clock to ensure essential services continue operating in Canterbury.
Transpacific Waste Management South Island operates Christchurch City’s kerbside collection service, the City’s largest transfer station, the Kate Valley Landfill, and is the largest commercial waste and recycling collector in the region. It has encountered enormous increases in the volume of waste in the aftermath of the earthquake.
“The biggest challenge we face is transporting the unbelievable volume of waste from damaged distribution centres to the Kate Valley Landfill,” he says. “The massive volume of contaminated food waste needs to be processed quickly to keep people safe. We’re working around the clock to ensure this happens and have brought in skilled drivers from around New Zealand. We may also bring some in from Australia to keep up with demand.
“We’ve never experienced anything like this before, but people are instinctively doing what they can to help people recover and rebuild their lives. Even being able to put their rubbish out and have it taken away as usual is helping some people regain some sense of normality.”
Since the earthquake, Kate Valley has been receiving between three and four times its normal daily waste volume.
Transpacific Industrial Services and Transpacific Technical Services have also brought skilled staff and specialist equipment in from around New Zealand to help with the clean-up and efficient disposal of hazardous waste.
