Progressive supports stronger representation of medical staff on hospital boards

District Health Boards would be assisted by further input from health professionals and clinical staff according to Progressive MP, Matt Robson.

The Health Ministry's recent Hospital Benchmark Information report showed that in general District Health Boards are doing a good job around the country, but there is room for improvement in some areas.

"One way we can improve the performance of our hospitals and public health care providers is to include medical staff in the decision making processes at DHB level. They are then able to raise issues like emergency department processes or problems with day-surgery, explain front line experiences and recommended solutions directly with the Board. This could be achieved by having non-voting representatives at meetings, or including a voting representative on the Board.

"I am going to work with my colleague, the Minister of Health, Annette King to ensure that there is at least representation for medical specialists at DHB meetings. Annette King has already started work on this, Matt Robson said.

Currently many DHBs use clinical boards to inform them of key medical issues affecting health care in their region, however, it is not a requirement to have medical staff involved in decision making at Board meetings.
