Dunne should leave Government
Peter Dunne’s announcement that he wants to join National after the election is a welcome declaration of his post-election intentions - but he should back up his convictions by leaving the government now, Progressive leader Jim Anderton says.
“Parties should say before the election what they intend to do after it. So I praise Peter Dunne for making an announcement. Voters know anyone who votes United is voting for a National-led government.
“Having made his choice, Mr Dunne should follow through now. He should give up his ministerial position in a Labour-led government.
“It’s not a good look to drive around in a ministerial car saying you want to get rid of the government you are still part of. If he really wants to get rid of the government, why doesn‘t he leave it? He doesn’t have to constitutionally, but sticking with this government until the election, and then saying he wants to change horses makes it look like Mr Dunne is saying he doesn’t care who the government is, as long as there’s a place for him,” Jim Anderton said.
