Echoes of injustice reverberate

"The tragic death of little Georgia McCarten-Graham and the pathetic sentence of her killer to a one year jail term sends a message that reckless driving causing death is not a serious offence," said Parents Centre Chief Executive, Viv Gurrey.

"Our criminal justice system has failed the family of Georgia McCarten-Graham on two counts; by not involving them in the appeal process and then by handing down such a woefully inadequate sentence," said Mrs Gurrey.

"It is a sad day when justice becomes a commodity that can be bought and sold. It is the justice of fools," said Mrs Gurrey.

"Driving dangerously is always a potentially lethal activity. In the wrong hands, a car is as deadly as a loaded gun," said Mrs Gurrey.

"Dangerous driving is unacceptable, and to cause the death of an innocent life is an act of murder. The sentence handed down to Ding Yan Zgao is inadequate, irrespective of reparations paid.

"Sentencing should reflect the need to change our driving culture and develop responsible attitudes. Driving to conditions is a learned response and one which we need to be at pains to re-enforce, particularly amongst young drivers."

"Parents everywhere will be deeply saddened by the death of Georgia, and by a justice system that has lost its soul," said Mrs Gurrey.
