UN Rep Says New
Zealand is a Leader in Firearms Licensing
New York based United Nations director of Peace and Disarmament for Asia and the Pacific, Mr Sutomo Ishiguri says many of the United Nations 191 member states should follow the New Zealand model of firearms licensing.
Mr Ishiguri is in New Zealand as one of 21 keynote speakers at an International Firearms Safety Seminar in Christchurch and has requested that the findings of the seminar be presented at a United Nations Firearms Seminar to be held in June in New York.
“A number of Pacific States in particular haven’t the resources to research the most appropriate licensing procedures. The New Zealand process is world class and it is pleasing to see so many Pacific Island States represented at this seminar who are here to learn first hand about the New Zealand model.”
Conference co-ordinator Inspector Joe Green of the New Zealand Police, says all the speakers at the seminar bring different perspectives to firearms safety and promote constructive discussion amongst participants from Canada, United States, the Pacific Islands and Australia, as well as New Zealand.
Mr Green says the seminar continues through to Friday in Christchurch including a special on-range workshop for the Pacific Island representatives.
