Workers' kids go without lunch
Workers' kids go without lunch because of Spotless incompetence
Spotless Services' failure to pay wages to Service and Food Workers Union members has left the children of cleaners and hospital workers without money for their school lunch.
Stressed and tearful cleaners told of their shame in having to borrow money from friends, family and neighbours so that bills could be met.
Sue Lafaele, airport cleaner, says Spotless already pays the lowest wages. Her members live from week to week because they are only earning $10.95 an hour.
"We're so ashamed and embarrassed at not having the money for our kids' lunches," Lafaele says.
Hospital worker Loretta Hannah says this is the third time this year workers have gone without because of Spotless incompetence.
"This is just total incompetence. We're sick of it." Hannah says.
Given this has occurred on numerous occasions this year, SFWU Regional Secretary Jill Ovens questions whether Spotless is taking adequate steps to ensure members wages are paid on time
"This has left our members feeling stressed and humiliated. It is not acceptable," Ovens concluded.
