Barnardos welcomes Section 59 report
The report of the Justice and Electoral Committee on Sue Bradford’s private member’s bill was welcomed today by Murray Edridge, Chief Executive of Barnardos NZ.
“The Committee had listened to the weight of informed opinion calling for repeal while at the same time responding to the call from concerned parents for clarification of the law as it relates to restraint of a child in certain circumstances,” he said. “Reasonable people will recognise this as good lawmaking in a democracy.”
“Barnardos has long supported the call for full repeal. If the recommendations of the Select Committee are adopted then we will monitor the operation of the new law closely,” he concluded.
