Carbon Charge Move Welcomed
Government indications that Select Committee consideration of a carbon charge as an alternative to the Emissions Trading Scheme is strongly welcomed by the petroleum exploration and production industry according to PEPANZ Executive Officer John Pfahlert.
“A carbon charge is a much easier instrument to deal with and should have lower compliance costs,” he said.
“We have previously said such a charge has merit, and are therefore pleased that the issue is now reopened for considered debate.
“A carbon charge would be considerably less complex than the emissions trading regime implemented by the previous administration,” he noted.
PEPANZ is calling on the Government to ensure that the Select Committee’s terms of reference are as wide as is possible and that good ideas and debate are not constrained by either time or ideology.
