Hauraki Welcomes Ministerial Review Panel
Findings
The Hauraki Maori Trust Board welcomes the Ministerial Review of the Foreshore and Seabed Act 2004. Chairman Toko Renata said, “It’s a good report – we agree with the findings that the present Act should be repealed.”
The Ministerial review panel has proposed a new Act based on the Treaty of Waitangi principle of providing for both Maori and Pakeha world views. Mr Renata noted the panel’s emphasis on “how important Te Tiriti o Waitangi is and that Maori and Pakeha are bound together by our founding document.”
Harry Mikaere, Deputy-Chairman, said, “While the review makes two proposals, we prefer the regional iwi proposal as practical solutions need to be found at a regional level. We expect Foreshore and Seabed to be an essential part of our Hauraki treaty settlement.”
“We remain committed to finding solutions and to work for the benefit of all New Zealanders. We have never had a problem with public access to the beaches” said Mr Mikaere
The Hauraki Maori Trust Board will now study the report over the next month.
