Another day, another assault on our democracy by National/Act Government
“The people of Christchurch should be shocked and appalled at the outrageous decision of the National/Act Government to sack our democratically elected ECan councillors and cancel October elections”, Tony Milne, Chair of the Labour Local Government Committee said today.
“A fundamental principle of democracy is no taxation without representation, yet a Government appointed commission will be determining the future of Canterbury's water”, Tony Milne said.
“This clear attack on our democracy has a very clear purpose; to reward National's election backers who want water storage and allocation. This is another example of National rewarding the few at the expense of the many; particular the residents of Christchurch City who pay around 70% of the ECan rates bill”, Tony Milne said.
“National is sending a very clear message to the people of Christchurch that your voice doesn’t matter. The Labour Local Government Committee will be standing up for the people of Christchurch against this blatant power grab”, Tony Milne said.
