Keeping Hide in Local Govt Helpful to Auckland
Having Rodney Hide stay on as Minister for Local Government is helpful to the new Auckland Council, claims one Auckland Councillor, Cameron Brewer.
“In recent days some of the left-wing councillors have been openly baying for his blood. However I believe its advantageous to have the minister who set up this massive new council around for a bit longer.
“Let’s not forget that this municipal amalgamation has made Auckland the largest council in Australasia which is still very much bedding in. Sacking its architect would not have helped Auckland one bit. Whatever people may think about the Auckland legislation, no one knows it better than Rodney. Giving the portfolio to someone else until November would have only been a distraction for the new council.
“Like him or not, Rodney has a comprehensive grasp on the workings of the new council and the three pieces of legislation that set it up: The Local Government (Tamaki Makaurau Reorganisation) Act 2009, the Local Government (Auckland Council) Act 2009, and the Local Government (Auckland Transitional Provisions) Act 2010.
“Rodney’s office has always had an open-door policy with local government politicians and officials and this will continue to be helpful over the next six months,” says Cameron Brewer.
