NZ Christian Network deplores Asian invasion leaflets

New Zealand Christian Network deplores recent letterbox drops in Christchurch and Auckland that refer to a so-called Asian invasion.

National Director Glyn Carpenter says the leaflets – produced by a small extreme group called Right Wing Resistance – are trading on irrational fears.

While Mr Carpenter believes most New Zealanders oppose racist comments, history has shown such comments can create a climate that a tiny minority may latch on to.

Extreme inflammatory views do nothing to encourage a thoughtful debate about our immigration policies and the changing nature of our country and our faiths and beliefs.

Mr Carpenter says it is more helpful to concentrate on the positive contributions that migrants bring to their new home: many Asians bring values desperately needed, such as a hard-work ethic and respect for marriage and family.

A debate on immigration is certainly needed in New Zealand, but promoting xenophobia is not the way to go about it. In fact, this approach makes debate even more difficult, as those with reasonable questions hesitate to speak out.

New Zealand Christian Network is a broad-spectrum network of churches and Christian leaders, with a Board of Reference that includes leaders from all the main denominations. It seeks to present a biblically orthodox position on issues, reflecting the views of the majority of Christians in New Zealand.
