Book Explores Emergency Responses To Economic Collapse

As the global economy hurtles towards what may be an economic ground zero, some forewarned strategic thinkers are ready to share their emergency plans.

Fleeing Vesuvius NZ Edition, a book whose subject – responding to economic and environmental collapse – could not be more timely, is being launched today Wednesday October 12th, 5.15pm at Bowen House, Parliament, Wellington.

"We have been using a system that was always going to crash", according to Laurence Boomert, co-publisher and one of the book's 39 essay writers. "The world monetary system is; inherently unsustainable, destructive, inclined to corruption and most importantly, archaic. 21st century societies have far more enlightened options that they could be using today."

Fleeing Vesuvius was originally published in response to Ireland’s economic collapse. Despite its daunting subject matter the book is surprisingly upbeat, putting forward solutions that involve changes to our economy and financial system, our use of energy and land, our world view and our relationships to others, particularly those in our own communities.

"Fleeing Vesuviusoffers a powerhouse of social and economic innovations many of which are in action in the world today", says Boomert. "These may turn out to be our most rewarding modern inventions to date, especially if we are to survive and evolve past our current impasse."

The book has been published by trustees of the Living Economies Educational Trust, which promotes alternative economic systems, especially community exchanges and interest-free currencies.

The NZ Edition is introduced by Jonathan Boston, School of Government, Victoria University of Wellington, who will be speaking at the launch, which will be hosted by Green MP Gareth Hughes.

According to Mr Boston, “Fleeing Vesuvius NZ Edition is unusual, critically important and refreshingly provocative.”
