Ngati Manawa Leaders Condemn Judge’s Sentencing as ‘Over the Top’
Ngati Manawa leaders Maurice Toe Toe, Chairman, Te Runanga o Ngati Manawa and Pem Bird, Chairman, Te Ope Take Matauranga o Ngati Manawa have come out strongly against the sentences handed down in the Auckland High Court yesterday to Tame Iti and Te Rangikaiwhiria Kemara condemning the judgements as ‘completely over the top’ and out of all proportion to the offences committed.
“It would appear that the sustained mainstream spin, hype and emotion ad nauseum surrounding this case which have painted Tame and Te Rangikaiwhiria as anti New Zealand society with villainous and destructive intent has struck, stuck and ‘coloured’ the thought processes of the Judge”.
“How else can you explain the harsh severity of the sentences that have been inflicted on Tame and Te Rangikaiwhiria who if they were not folk heroes before most certainly are now, targets of a grave injustice that will inspire present and future generations of mokopuna to take their own stand against such a system . “
“We know a fair shake when we see one and this absolutely is not. All it does is confirm and add ammunition to the fact that Maori in general are not treated impartially by the justice system and that bias and prejudice are alive, well and kicking.”
“We are right behind an appeal and any other action being contemplated by others elsewhere and will discuss how this support can be shown in real terms over the days ahead.”
