The City Is Ours Minds Your Peace

Press-release -

The City Is Ours Minds Your Peace

On Sunday the 14th of April 2013 the City is Ours celebrates Wellington's 31st Nuclear Free City Anniversary.

With permission from the kind folks at NZTA the City is Ours will be minding a field of late blooming Peace flowers
next to State Highway 1; by the "Welcome to Wellington, Capital of Nuclear Free New Zealand" sign on the corner of Caledonia Street and Calabar Road. This effort further highlights the delay by Wellington City Council in bringing forward a request by the society to incorporate the Peace Symbol on the welcome sign; so giving effect to its message.

The City is Ours President Maria van der Meel claimed that sporting a Peace Symbol at arrival points such as the Airport and the waterfront would wow overseas visitors who themselves come from countries without this revered status. She said manufacturers could cash in also and go the extra mile to include; Made in Nuclear Free New Zealand on their labeling of goods for export.

On the 31st of May 2012 the House of Representatives moved and carried a Notice of Motion by the Hon Maryan Street to;

Celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the New Zealand Nuclear Free Zone, Disarmament, and Arms Control Act;

Reaffirm the commitment of New Zealand to the achievement of a nuclear weapons free world;

Welcome the 2010 agreement of States Parties to the Non-Proliferation Treaty that any use of nuclear weapons could create catastrophic humanitarian consequences and that all States Parties must play a role in building the framework for a nuclear weapons free world;

Commend Norway for its announcement to hold a conference in 2013 on humanitarian consequences of nuclear weapons to build political momentum for a global ban; and

Call on the New Zealand Government to provide the highest support for this conference.
