We are very prepared for Cyclone Pam’s arrival – Civil Defence Minister
“At the moment we're predicting very severe weather. And we've been through this before,” Civil Defence Minister Nikki Kaye told TVNZ’s Q+A programme this morning regarding preparations for Cyclone Pam’s arrival here.
“I'll be talking to the civil defence controllers and listening more to their individual plans for particular areas. But I’m very confident we are very prepared for this,” she says.
When asked by our political reporter Heather du Plessis-Allan what is being done to try and reach New Zealanders in Vanuatu the Minister Kaye said the communications infrastructure is down once that’s up and running the Government will know more.
“But the
best thing that New Zealanders can do is 1; look on www.safetravel.govt.nz 2; send short
text messages, because those are likely to get through to
loved ones,” says Minister Kaye.
Q+A, 9-10am Sundays on TV ONE and one
hour later on TV ONE plus 1. Repeated Sunday evening at
11:35pm. Streamed live at www.tvnz.co.nz
