At The End Of Their Tether
At The End Of Their Tether

"No matters to bring to the attention of the House" , is the response by the Primary Production Committee to a petition signed by over 7000 people requesting the tethering of goats be banned on roadsides.
Principal petitioner , Tony Robson is disappointed the petition is being binned , "to me this shows a lack of caring for animal welfare and disrespect for the petitioners", he says. The practice of tethering/chaining goats on roadsides has been a long held practice. The petition raised concerns of associated neglect , cruelty , social isolation and had support from the NZSPCA , HUHANZ and other animal welfare groups.
In May of this year the government acknowledged animals as sentient beings and regularly announces that it takes animal welfare seriously. The principal petitioner goes on to say , " The rhetoric is good but fails to deliver and the fact they could not even compile a report or take this petition seriously is another example of why an independent commissioner for animals is needed in parliament ".
