Pressure Group Set to Lock Horns with Politicians on Students’ Issues

13 APRIL 2017
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

A new political lobby group has been formed to challenge politicians on students’ welfare, an article written by the Aotearoa Students’ Alliance spokesperson Jack Close on The Spinoff yesterday shows. The group has two policy objectives: to reform the student living costs loan; and a royal commission into the state of mental health in New Zealand.

“In the last week, the Students’ Alliance has uncovered that the Ministry of Education has known for a decade that their living costs policy has no rationale, and that young people are more likely to die of suicide than cancer and car crashes combined. The time is now for accountability”, says spokesperson Jack Close.

The Students’ Alliance is an activist organisation with the aim of getting in the faces of politicians to demand legislative reform to improve students’ welfare. Support for the week-old group is booming, with more backing from hundreds of students at universities and tertiary institutes across New Zealand each day.
