The Māori Affairs Committee is calling for public submissions on the Ngā Hapū o Te Iwi o Whanganui Claims Settlement Bill.

The bill would enact the cultural and commercial redress agreed in the Ngā Hapū o Te Iwi o Whanganui Deed of Settlement, He Rau Tukutuku. The deed was signed on 2 May 2026.

Among other things, the cultural redress in the bill includes the return of several properties to Ngā Hapū, several geographic name changes, and the establishment of Ngā Tūtei a Maru, a board to administer four reserves of land. Commercial redress in the bill includes rights to purchase, or rights of first refusal over, a number of properties.

The bill also sets out the history and records the Crown’s acknowledgements and its formal apology to Ngā Hapū o Te Iwi o Whanganui.

The bill contains redress provisions that require legislation for their implementation. Some things are provided for only in the deed of settlement because they do not require legislation.

The Māori Affairs Committee may consider travelling to the Whanganui rohe to hear submissions on this bill. You may wish to bear this in mind when indicating whether you would like to make an oral submission on the bill.
