Women in Business in 21st Century Features Prominent New Zealand Speakers

An all-women’s conference featuring a prominent group of New Zealand business women is being staged by the Queenstown Chamber of Commerce on May 22nd 2012, designed specifically to assist professional women to enhance their business skills.

Chamber CEO Ann Lockhart said the motivation behind the Women in Business in the 21st century conference is to “help empower women in both their business and personal lives”.

“We have selected a range of speakers based on their experience in their particular fields and most are household names in New Zealand. We have been fortunate to secure this leading group of women who have been inspirational in their own careers. The early response to registrations reinforces for us that there are many women, both in Queenstown and the wider Otago and Southland region, who are keen to take advantage of the opportunity to upskill themselves without having to travel to one of the main centres to do so.”

Conference MC is Hilary Barry, one of television’s most recognisable faces as TV3’s anchor 3 News newsreader with Mike McRoberts. She was awarded Best News or Current Affairs Presenter at the 2011 AFTA Awards and has also worked extensively in radio, currently appearing on the Radio Live breakfast show.

Speakers include high profile lawyer Mai Chen who is a founding partner of the renowned New Zealand law firm, Chen Palmer. She is also Adjunct Professor of Commercial Law at the Auckland Business School and her address will focus on lessons she has learned in balancing a diverse professional life, including running a law firm, lecturing and writing a book.

Theresa Gattung whose name is synonymous with Telecom, as its former CEO, is a well-known business woman and author. She will hold a workshop for groups or individuals on May 21st and speak at the conference about her personal challenges, during her time as head of New Zealand’s largest corporate company.

The creator and founder of the original Wearable Arts concept, Dame Suzie Moncrieff, has a fascinating story to share based on her journey, literally from the kitchen table, to the award winning international spectacular known as WOW.

The younger generation is represented by New Zealand Young Achievers’ Award winner Miranda Waple who is currently General Manager of the Luxury Products Division of L’Oreal New Zealand. She will discuss the rewards and challenges involved in her rise to a significant role in one of the world’s leading cosmetic companies.

Dr Libby Weaver (Ph.D.) is one of Australasia’s leading nutrition specialists and weight loss experts and her address will centre on empowering women to make optimum health choices.

Personal branding and understanding the power of presentation will be the focus of style guru and motivational speaker Lisa O’Neill’s talk, while Kristen Cooper who is a former national president of the Human Resources Institute of New Zealand, will conduct a workshop on management leadership and candid conversations around the theme of ‘what women should know and can do’.

The host for the conference cocktail party is Marlene Poynder, General Manager of Hilton Queenstown and Kawarau Hotel.

“There are a lot of professional women in Queenstown and around the southern region who don’t often get the chance to learn from such a talented group of New Zealand business leaders,” said Ms Lockhart. “We certainly anticipate that people attending will gain practical and useable skills and learn something about themselves and their businesses and careers. It is important to take advantage of any self-development opportunities and the Chamber recognises its role in assisting where possible.”
