Upgrade planned for premier park - Monte Cecilia

Aucklanders will have an opportunity to have their say on the future use and development of Monte Cecilia, one of Auckland City Council’s premier parks.

Today’s Arts, Culture and Recreation Committee endorsed a draft master plan for public consultation. The plan proposes development of the park and Pah Homestead, to create a place of discovery and peaceful retreat, offering leisure, arts and cultural attractions.

As part of the upgrade, the council will look at options to support and optimise the use of Pah Homestead with the provision of activities such as functions, receptions and events.

Councillor Penny Sefuiva, chairperson of the Arts, Culture and Recreation Committee, said the plan outlines opportunities to develop Monte Cecilia into a citywide park destination.

“The upgrade will help fill a gap in high quality parks in the Avondale, Tamaki and Roskill areas and will help relieve demand on Auckland’s 20 other premier parks, including One Tree Hill and Auckland Domain.

“The plan highlights proposals such as a visual arts centre and sculpture park, as well as the restoration of the historic Pah Homestead. Monte Cecilia is a special place, and the council is committed to developing it to meet the needs of Aucklanders, and maintaining it for future generations to enjoy.

“In developing the master plan, the council aims to provide a co-ordinated approach to develop the park and homestead, and create an environment that builds on Auckland’s unique character and heritage.”

The draft master plan will be available for public consultation later this month with key stakeholders and the wider public. Details of supporting open days will be sent to stakeholders and local residents shortly.
