Youth Councillors To Get Physical
Youth Councillors To Get Physical This Weekend
ROTORUA 09.02.10: The 2010 Rotorua District Youth Council is preparing for the unknown as they kick off their year in office with a training weekend designed to challenge them both mentally and physically.
The 17 new youth councillors will participate in a ‘Provoke Training’ workshop run by Ministry of Youth Development on Thursday [11 February] followed by three days at Lake Okareka where they will have to rely on each other to get through an array of difficult tasks.
While they will get an introduction to local government practices and learn about their roles, Rotorua District Council youth projects officer, Jill Campbell, says their initiation certainly won’t be a ‘walk in the park’.
“Qualified outdoor instructors are helping us run a ‘Survivor’ weekend in unfamiliar territory based on the popular reality television series.
“Youth councillors will encounter the wilderness, get a little wet, and face numerous challenges, but they’ll learn to work as a team and learn to trust each other.
“We’ve run successful ‘Survivor’ camps with youth councillors for the past two years. The training weekend helps create instant bonds between youth councillors resulting in some pleasing productivity from them during the year.”
The Youth Council training camp takes place from Friday 12 to Sunday 14 February 2010.
