Media release from Northland Fish & Game

Fishing experts offer free trout fishing knowhow

FOR USE MONDAY SEPT 9,2013

Northland Fish & Game is inviting anyone who wants to learn how to “get started” in trout fishing to join them for some free tips and expert advice.

The workshop will be run on Saturday September 21 from 10am to mid-day at the Lake Manuwai car park in Waipapa.

Fish & Game officer Nathan Burkepile says “the focus will be on getting set up to start fishing for trout in Northland – and it’s aimed at people who haven’t trout fished before.”

The main focus of the workshop will be on spin and lure fishing, as they’re methods that  “allow newbies to take what away what they learn, and go out and catch a fish.”

“Fishing is a great way to enjoy the outdoors in a fun pursuit that even has the potential to put some tasty wild food on the table. And some locals might be surprised at what nice trout can be caught locally,” he adds.

Mr Burkepile says the topics covered will include rod, reel and line selection, types of lures, and fishing techniques for both lakes and rivers.

Northland Fish & Game will also provide a small fly fishing demonstration at the end of the workshop to give people an idea of what’s involved.
