HortNZ Watches Tau Fly Detection Closely

Horticulture New Zealand is closely monitoring the response to the detection of a single male Tau Fly in Manurewa, Auckland.

This fly is not considered to be as economically threatening to New Zealand horticulture as the Queensland Fruit Fly.

“Despite this, any detection like this makes New Zealand’s fruit and vegetable exporters nervous,” HortNZ chief executive Mike Chapman says.

All efforts must now be focused on establishing the extent of any population, containing it and then eradicating it.

“We are confident this localised detection will be swiftly and effectively eradicated.”

“And once again we find ourselves calling on the general public in Auckland to assist with a fruit fly detection, but we know everyone helps where they can and we greatly appreciate it,” Mike says.

It is a great help to the industry if people can be vigilant, work within the containment zone restrictions and be careful about where they transport fresh produce.
