Slips Cause Highway Closure In Buller District
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 26 May 2025 3.19pm | West Coast, Canterbury
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) is advising drivers of a road closure at least until tomorrow morning on State Highway 6 through the Lower Buller Gorge between Inangahua Junction and Westport, after heavy rain caused multiple slips.
The stretch of highway, between Inangahua and the cross roads where State Highways 6 and 67 meet, will remain closed tonight and a further update is due at 10am tomorrow (Tuesday).
Multiple slips occurred on the stretch of highway through Sunday night and Monday morning, complicated by ongoing heavy rain meaning the slips continue to move.
Teams are working to clear access through the slips, but in the meantime, motorists are advised to use alternative routes via Reefton, Greymouth and the Great Coast Road.
