Daylight saving support delights Dunne
United Future leader Peter Dunne is delighted with the support that the petition to extend the period of daylight saving has received.
The petition is now closed and will be presented to Parliament by Nelson city councillor Mark Holmes and accepted by Peter Dunne this Thursday, 22 March at 1.30pm.
"We are absolutely ecstatic with the support that this petition has received. Many people went out of their way and used up a lot of their own time to help distribute petition forms and collect signatures," said Mr Dunne.
"We believe we have at least 40 000 signatures, with a few forms still coming in, which is a great result.
"I think that the support we have received from all sectors of the community is an acknowledgement that it is time to extend the period of daylight saving in New Zealand.
"It is great to
receive letters and media statements supporting the petition
from farmers, recreationists, schools, and tourism and
business interests.
"I think the significance of an extension will be very apparent tonight when many New Zealanders get home from work in the dark," said Mr Dunne.
"With the Europeans and Americans pushing their daylight saving out to over 30 weeks a year the precedent is there for the Government to extend the period so that this time next summer we will still be able to enjoy the after-work daylight," concluded Mr Dunne
