Mill workers back to work tomorrow

Mill workers back to work tomorrow

The majority of workers at the Pacific Steel mills in South Auckland will consider returning to work tomorrow.

The site has been shut since a man was seriously injured in a fall on Monday.

EPMU national secretary Andrew Little said that workers at the site were deeply upset by the incident.

“There has been a series of fatal and serious accidents on that site over the past five years,” he said.

“While it is too soon to apportion blame in Monday’s incident, the workers are understandably feeling a great deal of anxiety about returning to work. They have every right to take whatever steps they consider necessary to protect their health and safety, and we absolutely support them in doing that.”

Union members and officials are meeting with the company today to discuss health and safety at the Fletcher Steel-owned site.
