How to implement a long tail business strategy

How to implement a long tail business strategy online

The Internet is so crowded most businesses can be forgiven for feeling like the proverbial needle in a haystack, but by developing a ‘niche’ keyword strategy many can escape this trap.

CEO of cloud software developer Genesis Interactive, Manas Kumar, says it’s far more effective to strategically compete on multiple, low volume, less competitive keywords than to go after the common, sought after keywords.

“Discovering your niche keywords may be the answer to winning the online battle,” he says.

The Internet has made it possible to profitably sell niche products -- which ordinarily would have a small local market -- by giving the business global reach, but the challenge is in cutting through the clutter.

“The best way to achieve cut through is to build a long tail strategy for your business. This involves searching for keywords that have low hits but, collectively, generate large volume.

“Instead of focusing on the top 10 most popular keywords for marketing your website, make more use of the majority of key words which are outside that top ten. Together they bring in more traffic than the top10 which is very cluttered with competition,” says Manas.

To make this simpler for companies, Genesis Interactive recently invented www.cometseo.com -- an online application that uses social media, search engines and user generated content to drive qualified traffic to a company’s website.

Comet SEO automatically trawls through the web and comes back with relevant keywords that your website should be competing on. In some cases, if your website is competing on keywords that already have a large number of results associated with it, Comet SEO will look at recommending niche keywords that provide a long tail approach to winning on collective search volume for low competition keywords,” says Manas.

He says the idea is for the user to enter a "root" keyword (generally a single word keyword such as email, coffee or house) and let Comet SEO discover niche keywords based on a complex algorithm developed by the company.

Once Comet SEO has found the right keywords relevant to the longtail business strategy, it then simply adds them to the SERP (Search Engine Result Pages) tracker.

“We believe the long tail is a definite business opportunity for any business out there – in terms of your product and also how you use the internet. Products that are in low demand locally, can globally make up a market share that rivals or exceeds bestsellers. This tool helps you leverage that opportunity,” says Manas.
