Housing plans pick up across the North Island

Almost 30,000 new homes were consented in the year to September 2016, up 14 percent from the September 2015 year, Statistics New Zealand said today. Within this, North Island dwelling numbers were up 25 percent, but South Island numbers fell 3.9 percent.

"All nine North Island regions consented more new dwellings in the latest year ended September than in the previous one," business indicators senior manager Neil Kelly said. "This was led by Auckland and nearby regions."

North Island regions with significant new dwelling increases in the September 2016 year were:
• Auckland up 1,239 (14 percent)
• Waikato up 845 (31 percent)
• Bay of Plenty up 829 (50 percent)
• Wellington up 458 (30 percent)
• Northland up 321 (40 percent).

In the South Island, 408 (31 percent) more new dwellings were consented in Otago, but 737 (11 percent) fewer in Canterbury.

September month consents up

In September 2016, 2,550 new homes were consented, up 308 from September 2015. The number in Wellington region was up 168, including 93 units in the Wellington City Council-owned Arlington Apartments. Dwelling numbers in Auckland and Otago also increased from September 2015.

When seasonally adjusted, the number rose 0.2 percent from August 2016, following a 1.5 percent fall in August.

Consents for all buildings (including alterations) were valued at $1.6 billion in the month – $1.1 billion for residential buildings and $509 million for non-residential buildings.
