New Green Party Agriculture Coordinator
New Green Party Agriculture Coordinator
The Green Party has appointed a new Sustainable Primary Production Co-ordinator, to promote the benefits of New Zealand remaining free of genetically engineered species, and the benefits of sustainable agriculture.
Charlotte Squire is a freelance journalist who runs her own organics consultancy and is a former certification officer with Bio-Gro.
Green Party Agriculture Spokesperson Ian Ewen-Street said Ms Squire would help raise the profile of rural and farming issues both in the Green Party and the wider community.
"It is important the rural community and public are aware of the full social, economic and ecological benefits of New Zealand remaining GE-free in field and food," Mr Ewen-Street said, "particularly in the count-down to the lifting of the GE moratorium. It is farmers whose livelihoods are on the line should their production systems become contaminated."
Ms Squire would also contribute to regular newsletters on primary production issues, and expose the inherent unsustainability of the corporate farming model.
