Additional excavations to be opened for Browns Bays sewer upgrade

Changes are to be made to the road layout of Glencoe Rd, near the Beach Rd intersection in Browns Bay, for about four months, to accommodate a major sewer upgrade project that is now nearing completion.

The changes are needed to make way for an access pit to be dug on the westbound side of the road near St Annes Hall to retrieve an underground tunnelling machine that has been installing a new large sewer beneath the length of Anzac Rd.

The work is a key part of North Shore City Council's Project CARE, and once completed will reduce wet weather overflows of sewage onto Browns Bay Beach.

Two-way traffic will be maintained throughout, although the entrance to the St Annes Hall car-park will be temporarily moved around the corner to Beach Rd.

All changes will be clearly signposted.

Once the machine has been retrieved another shorter tunnel across to the end of will connect the new sewer to the existing network. A second pit will be dug on the verge at the end of Glencoe Pl to accommodate this work.

Water Services wastewater networks project manager Dave Woods says it is possible the new layout may cause some traffic delays, but the council and its contractors would work to ensure any disruption is minimised.

"We would like to thank motorists and local residents for their patience while we complete the final stages of this very important project," he says.

Two new large sewers have been installed beneath the length of the beach front reserve and underneath Anzac Rd in the $12m project.

"We are replacing the smaller old sewers with larger, 2.1m diameter sewers, which will have the capacity to provide temporary storage during wet weather to reduce overflows of sewage onto the beach, and also provide for dry weather flows from expected future growth," Mr Woods says. The two pits will be required for about four months, and once the tunnel is completed and the new sewer connected, both areas will be restored to their original condition.
