The Wellington-based Westpac Rescue Helicopter has just returned from a farming accident south of Blenheim.
The helicopter, with a Wellington Free Ambulance paramedic onboard, was called to a rural property near Seddon where a woman had been rammed and then run over by a cow around 6:15 this evening.
On our arrival the 63 year old Seddon woman was being treated by the Seddon Fire Brigade and a St John Ambulance crew from Blenheim.
"The woman told us she had been in a paddock with a herd of cows when she believes a mother cow ran into her to protect her calf" says Westpac Rescue Helicopter crewman Dave Greenberg. "After taking the full thrust of the cows head into her upper chest the woman was knocked over and then partially trampled by it".
The woman suffered a very large avulsion (tearing away of the skin) across her upper chest but had no other apparent injuries.
She was transported to Wellington Hospital where she is currently being assessed and treated.
