Award for Dunedin writer-illustrator

Dunedin-based writer-illustrator Robyn Belton has been recognised for her services to children’s literature by the Ignition Children’s Book Festival.

The inaugural Ignition Children’s Book Festival Award will be presented at the festival’s booklover’s banquet at the University of Otago staff club on the festival opening day on 2 November.

This is the first year the festival has been held by the University Book Shop Otago and Dunedin Public Libraries, and will run over the first weekend of November each year. The programme comprises entertainment for all ages, thought-provoking discussions, stories and workshops.

Paying tribute to Ms Belton’s work, festival organiser Phillippa Duffy says she has made a sustained and dedicated contribution to children’s literature and illustration over a lifetime of work.

“Her illustration style focuses on the detail of everyday life and brings a whimsical touch,” says Ms Duffy.

Championing the place of animals in our lives is a common theme of Ms Belton’s work which appeals to young and not so young readers. Brave animal characters feature as prominently as their human counterparts in The Bantam and the Soldier, Herbert, and Greedy Cat.

As well as collaborating, mentoring and fostering talent, Ms Belton has a genuine interest in, and support for, booksellers, and a tireless commitment to schools and children.

Events Co-ordinator for Dunedin Public Libraries Kay Mercer says Robyn has supported many children’s book events at the libraries. “She is an inspiration to children and fellow writers, and we are proud to have the opportunity to celebrate Robyn’s contribution to the world of children’s books in this way,” she says.
