Hurunui Horse Treks
Hurunui Horse Treks
One of the world’s leading
horse-trekking operations, which has attracted
many Kiwi
adventurers over the last 18 years, has come on the
market.
New Zealand’s Hurunui Horse Treks, which takes
tourists through the
spectacular South Island high
country, has been an innovator in the industry.
It was
one of the first trekking operations to have an Internet
presence,
http://www.hurunui.co.nz, and was instrumental in
establishing quality control standards in the
industry.
Owners Rob Stanley and Mandy Platt intend
pursuing other tourism interests.
Rob Stanley says the
business has been the ride of his life, growing the
trekking operation from scratch – they started on a
friend’s farm with four
horses – into an award-winning
tourist enterprise catering to a worldwide
demand. Well
over half the trekkers are from overseas, he says, taking
their choice of rides ranging from two to 10
days.
Hurunui Horse Treks features in the book, Great
Horse Treks of the World,
and operates 30 horses out of
its 24-hectare base in inland North
Canterbury, at the
gateway to the high country.
Rob and Mandy still see
Hurunui Horse Treks as a family concern, despite
its
phenomenal growth.
Rob says it would suit a family
with a love of horses and people, and an
adventurous
spirit.
He has no doubt even more value could be added
through introducing new
products such as hunting,
kayaking, rafting, mountain-biking, boating, or
fishing
– all made easier because existing marketing channels are in
place,
he says.
