Resource to ride out the skills shortage

With global skills shortages placing a major restriction on business growth, recruitment agency Robert Half has released a resource to help employers attract and maintain staff.

Robert Half’s Employer Branding White Paper draws on research from New Zealand, Australia, the United States, United Kingdom and Europe to analyse how a company’s image can attract or discourage staff, and provide solutions.

Drawing on the experience of companies such as TMP worldwide, Lion Nathan and Smiths Aerospace, as well as research conducted by Robert Half around the world, the White Paper examines what attracts employees to preferred employers.

“The last bastion of competitive advantage is really, how many better people do you have than your competitors?” says employer branding practice manager for TMP Worldwide James Wiggins.

“So it makes sense that the next big thing that organisations should be focusing on is how to be better at attracting the right people, making sure you retain them and then better developing those people to deliver on your business objectives and goals.”

As well as examining what defines an employer brand, its importance in attracting and retaining staff, the White Paper gives helpful advice on how to create an effective employer brand.

“It is really important to understand why potential candidates either want to join your organisation or wouldn’t even consider you as a potential employer,” say Kim Smith, division director of Robert Half Finance & Accounting in Auckland.

“It is equally important to understand what your employees in all departments, at all seniority levels and in all of your office locations understand to be your employee brand, what the ‘value add’ of being an employee with your company is. If these perceptions don’t match up to your business goals then it is time to begin looking at readdressing your employer brand.”

“If you have the resolve to invest time and effort across the business in defining and implementing a strong culture, a consistent employer brand, you will stand out from your competitors,” says Nigel Barcham, managing director of Robert Half Australia & New Zealand. “Candidates will want to come work for you, employees will be motivated and stay longer with the company and you will weather ups and downs in the labour market.”
