Scholarship Encourages Excellence For Deaf And Hearing Impaired New Zealanders
The National Foundation for the Deaf and the Deaf Association of New Zealand are calling for entries for the $15,000 Quest for Excellence scholarship.
The annual scholarship will be awarded during Deaf Awareness Week in September and is open to Deaf and hearing impaired citizens or permanent residents of New Zealand who have an undergraduate degree and plan to embark on postgraduate study in their chosen field.
Marianne Schumacher, executive manager of the National Foundation for the Deaf said the scholarship’s purpose is to reward and inspire people whose hearing disability has meant they have had to overcome great odds.
“Its principal focus is the pursuit of excellence, with an aim to facilitate post-graduate study and assist in the preparation for the person’s chosen profession,” said Ms Schumacher.
Last year’s Quest for Excellence scholarship recipient, Daniel Carruthers, said that winning the scholarship was a big help, with the funds assisting him with his research in China as part of his Tourism masters degree.
“The scholarship was something that gave me more impetus to get my masters completed,” said Daniel. “It has also opened new doors for me, and as a result I have made some useful contacts for my future career.”
