Education - The Right Response To Child Labour

Education - The Right Response To Child Labour

The country’s largest education sector union NZEI Te Riu Roa is proud to support an international campaign to mark World Day Against Child Labour (June 12th) which says the right response to child labour is education.

The global union, Education International which represents 30 million teachers and education workers worldwide, is asking all governments to ensure quality education for all children, and decent work for their parents.

The International Labour Organisation estimates that some 165 million children between the ages of 5 and 14 are involved in child labour. Many of these children work long hours, often in dangerous conditions.

Education International says while the number of children exploited in the worst forms of child labour has declined in recent years, the problem remains enormous and teachers are determined to do their bit to move children out of the workplace and back into the classroom.

Child labour is a barrier to education.
