The 'Maharey Principle' Hits Housing

News that the Government intends extracting $97 million in dividends from Housing New Zealand shows the hypocrisy of Labour and Alliance, National's Housing spokesperson David Carter said today.

"When in Opposition, profits by Housing New Zealand were referred to as 'obscene' or 'abhorrent' by Labour and Alliance politicians.

"But when in Government, such information is slipped into Parliament without a word of comment from the same politicians.

"Where are the howls of outrage from the welfare groups and churches that used to find profits by Housing New Zealand offensive and unjust?

"Where is the criticism we used to hear from the 'apolitical' social commentator, the Rev. Charles Waldegrave?

"When the Government promised new standards, I didn't think that was a euphemism for double standards," David Carter said.
