ACT MP Pushes For Parliamentary Inquiry
Monday 26 Aug 2002
ACT Social Services Spokesman Dr Muriel Newman today announced her intention to push for a parliamentary inquiry into how Bailey Junior Kuariki became a killer while in CYF custody.
"Since this morning CYF has denied that an internal investigation has exonerated the department and its handling of the case. The department now states that no investigation has ever been held into its interaction with Bailey Junior.
"We clearly need an independent investigation.
"In the first meeting of the social services parliamentary select committee I will advocate setting up an urgent inquiry into this tragedy.
"I hope I will receive cross-party support from other politicians keen to have the facts aired and issues of responsibility addressed," Dr Newman said.
