New Prostitution Bill Based on Swedish Law

First is putting forward a private member’s bill to change
the prostitution law.
Deputy Leader Peter Brown said the bill is based on Swedish legislation, which fundamentally provides for the clients of prostitutes to be prosecuted.
“In Sweden, prostitution has been deemed to be undesirable, because of its adverse effect on women and the incentive it gives to the trafficking of women.
“From research it is our understanding that prostitution in Sweden has been significantly curtailed since it was introduced into legislation in 1999. That legislation has been recognized as a huge success.
“The New Zealand First bill will compel the Government to take measures to encourage prostitutes to leave the industry.
“Our bill will also place restrictions on the publishing of advertisements for prostitution.
“This bill will be in the Member’s Ballot in time for the next draw,” concluded Mr Brown.
