Answers needed after Navy ammo theft

The theft of ammunition, flares and cartridges from the Navy’s Kauri Point arms depot raises serious concerns about security on Defence Force property, says Labour’s Spokesperson for Defence Iain Lees-Galloway.

“Clearly there has been a significant lapse in security, and a potential risk to the public. The incident happened at the weekend, but was apparently not reported until Monday.

“The commander in charge of the depot has admitted there was a breach but there are still unanswered questions around how the theft was allowed to happen. How was it so easy for the burglary to occur? Why wasn’t it reported immediately? What measures, if any, have been taken to ensure it doesn’t happen again?

“I believe Wayne Mapp needs to reassure New Zealanders that this is not the result of defence force funding cuts that recently saw some 300 personnel made redundant or civilianised,” Iain Lees-Galloway said.

“In the interests of public safety the Minister also needs to move quickly to find out if this is an isolated incident or part of a wider security problem.”
