Debating Auckland’s Future

Debating Auckland’s Future

Aucklanders will have the chance next month to measure up their mayoral candidates and hear where they stand on vital issues concerning the Supercity, during the Mayoral Debate to be held on 4 September at The University of Auckland.

Questions on topics such as housing affordability, future transport options and the proposed Auckland Unitary Plan will be directed to the current Mayor Len Brown as well as three other contenders for his job – John Minto, John Palino and the Reverend Uesifili Unasa.

Chaired by well-known journalist and political commentator Rod Oram, the Mayoral Debate, which is expected to be provocative and lively, is part of the Fast Forward lecture series at the National Institute of Creative Arts and Industries at the University. Hosted by the School of Architecture and Planning the annual series includes lectures by internationally renowned architects, as well as sessions focussing on the Auckland Supercity.

The Mayoral Debate will allow the public to hear the leading mayoral candidates’ detailed views and vision for the future of Auckland. The mayoral hopefuls, who hold diverse views on many issues, will have to answer five questions each. With less than two months left until Election Day this is the perfect opportunity for voters to size up the contenders. The debate is free and open to the public.

Gordon Campbell: On The Skewed Media Coverage Of Gaza

Now that he’s back as Foreign Minister, maybe Winston Peters should start reading the MFAT website which is currently celebrating the 25th anniversary of how Kiwis alerted the rest of the world to the genocide in Rwanda. How times have changed ...

In 2023, the government is clutching its pearls because senior Labour MP Damien O’Connor has dared suggest that Gaza’s civilian population - already living under apartheid and subjected to sixteen years of an illegal embargo, and now being herded together and slaughtered indiscriminately amid the destruction of their homes, schools, mosques, and hospitals - are also victims of what amounts to genocide. ACT: Call To Abolish Human Rights Commission

“The Human Rights Commission’s appointment of a second Chief Executive is just the latest example of a taxpayer-funded bureaucracy serving itself at the expense of delivery for New Zealanders,” says ACT MP Todd Stephenson. More

Public Housing Futures: Christmas Comes Early For Landlords

New CTU analysis of the National & ACT coalition agreement has shown the cost of returning interest deductibility to landlords is an extra $900M on top of National’s original proposal. This is because it is going to be implemented earlier and faster, including retrospective rebates from April 2023. More
