Arch opponent of longer and heavier trucks, Green MP Sue Kedgley will tomorrow (Saturday) accept a ride in a 39 tonne, 17 metre long truck.

Ms Kedgley said she was appalled that trials of juggernaut trucks up to 22 metres long have just been extended for another four months.

She will be taking the opportunity to question the driver about various aspects of truck safety, including stopping times.

"While I accept this ride is a PR stunt from the pro-trucking lobby group I am interested in hearing from the drivers of these trucks," she said.

Ms Kedgley said it was of real concern that last year trucks were, one way or another, involved in over 20 per cent of all New Zealand road fatalities.

"I do not accept that the onus is on other road users to get used to having these enormous trucks on our roads. It is the Green Party's view that all long haul heavy freight should be carried on rail where possible," she said.

Sue Kedgley will be picked up outside Bowen House, Wellington, at 11am.
