Destination New Zealand Must Not Be Relegated To Branch Office Status
"With New Zealand's tourism sector a $14 billion industry and now responsible for 1 in 10 jobs in this country, it requires dedicated efforts by government and tourism operators to ensure it continues to flourish," says National's tourism spokesperson Pansy Wong.
She says this makes it all the more important why Air New Zealand should not be exclusively talking to, or coming to an arrangement with, Qantas - without exploring other avenues.
"Our national carrier needs to ensure that it does not relegate New Zealand's tourism status and marketing to the equivalent of a branch office of Australia.
"Ease of access and dedicated international marketing of destination New Zealand are integral parts of our vital tourism industry."
Meanwhile, Ms Wong says she is delighted with her new role as National's tourism spokesperson.
"I look forward to re-establishing my links with the industry since my days as a New Zealand Tourism Board member.
"I intend being a strong champion and advocate for tourism both inside and outside Parliament," Pansy Wong says.
